Mithril Painter's League 01

Welcome to the first painting "contest" of the Mithril painters League

All miniatures that enter this contest should be related to this theme:
"Manly men, or how to wear a long beard and it's multiple uses"

1. Please keep this thread to post pictures, comments and questions about the miniatures being painted and the work that participants do around them.
2. If you have questions about how this contest works, you can ask/look for them in: http://mmp.faerylands.eu/viewtopic.php?id=772 (under development)
3. This thread will be opened until the 15th of November to allow participants to post all their work. (maybe extended/shortened depending on participants)
4. A new voting poll thread will be opened with all the "final picture" from all participants once the end date approaches. We will put a link to it here for easy access.

Interesting idea Master Maenas....

I have one question... for competitors in the first round... if it is impossible to find mithril minature with long beard... can the competitors make conversion figure..... !?!?

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

Of course! conversions are welcomed, and it is not necessary a long beard.... almost all dwarves have beards too so they are also welcomed the main intention here is, facial hair and pose xD it does not matter if it is a man, an elf (this would be strange, but why not?), orc or whatever races of middle earth. The title of the contest is just a general theme to have a similar starting point.

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

I have a miniature which would qualify, but it has a first layer of some plain colours  already.

Does it qualify as a valid enter or should I start one from the begining?

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

Perfectly viable Arthadan! this is more of a share thing than a true contest, so your and your mini are most than welcomed ^^

Oh and we can all start! so keep them coming!

This is my chosed mini ^^ :

It is m89 and I bought this one almost a year ago at ebay, it was very dirty so I wash and rince a couple of times then striped it by dipping+rubbing with alcohol and acetone mix. Then airbrushed it in white (Im a completely noob with the airbrush) see following pic, and my intention is to airbrushit again with a darkest tone from below.

Click to close

On these last months I just found that mithril coating is superthick and it sometimes covers a little bit too much of Chris T. work so I am starting to remove it from the miniatures I am willing to paint.

Are we sure this image is by McBride? It doesn't resemble his usual style at all.

It's the cover of MERP Dol Guldur - citadels serie. Based on Art credits, Angus is the author

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

Wow. There's far more "life" and motion in this one than his usual stuff. (Sorry, I've never been a fan of Angus' work, even though he illustrated some of my own books. I always felt his characters were too stumpy and stocky. But "each to his own", as we say here in Bree.)

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

What's that? Celeborn without heavy plate mail? But it's MERP... how's possible the Mithril version has a Tolkien-inaccurate plate armour then?

Oh my...

Sorry, I had to.

Hi folks,
I will paint M27, King Theoden, for the competition (and for pleasure). He has a long beard. And long hair.
Will post image soon.

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

Great selections!! I like them all!
Oh and orc very nice conversion! It really fits the mini a lot!

For those that still have to choose a mini, there is no problem in repeating, feel free to do so. But there is plenty of beards on the range wink

Let's recapitulate a little bit:

Orc --> m84 conversion
Milo --> m91
Gerold --> m27
Maenas --> m89

And Gerold, I also like that mini of Theoden alot, I painted it less than a year ago ^^

I'm planning on the Balrog (original version) - good excuse to get this character painted.

Well- I am planning to join this company. I still have a look around for the right figure.
Maybe this could be the start for myself to give that painting-less time an enT . . .

And yes: it is surely Master Angus painted this Dol Guldur illustration. I can confirm that!

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

Great news, David, Turambar and Arthadan!! Glad to see you all joining.
So....
Orc -- m84 Radagast conversion
Milo -- m91 Woodmen Elder
Gerold -- m27 Theoden, King of the Mark
Maenas -- m89 Beorning lord
Ddaines -- MB300 The Balrog of Moria
Turambar --
Arthadan --  LT5 Gamling the Old

Don't forget to put a pic of the starting point! even if you are going to strip it.
Because it's just a way of proofing from where we all started and where we are all going. And its obviously another way of sharing ^^

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

Ah- I finally found a miniature: it is Broggha Chr2009.
Well- I hope I did not miss the main idea- not really a long beard, but I hope he will be allowed . . .
This is he only figure in my attic which comes near . . .
Otherwise you have to tell me . . .

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

That one is just perfect Turambar wink I haven't got any one of those christmas, mainly because until someone over here alert me of them not being 54mm anymore I didn't "care" about them at all so this will be a nice opportunity for me to see one of them a little more closely.

1. Orc -- m84 Radagast conversion
2. Milo -- m91 Woodmen Elder
3. Gerold -- m27 Theoden, King of the Mark
4. Maenas -- m89 Beorning lord
5. Ddaines -- MB300 The Balrog of Moria
6. Turambar -- CHR2009 Broggha Hillmen Chieftain
7. Arthadan --  LT5 Gamling the Old

Re: Mithril Painter's League 01

As for the Christmas figures, Maenas, there by now are 8 figures in 32mm size and I think all of them are excellent figures. I especially like those of the last 5 years. (Though none of those is "canonical" as some would say lol)
As for this painting "competition" here, I think it's a good idea and I'm always having a look at the development. I have to confess that I won't take part in it as on the one hand I am lacking necessary painting-skills and on the other hand I cannot haste painting a figure in a fixed period of time.
I hope that every participant is able to take pictures accordingly because that would be essential for judging upon the results.
