Well, not really much interest here in this topic . . . Everybody seems to busy . . .
Painting the face of Mistress Galadriel actually a special thought reaches me:
. . . she´s got Bette Davis eyes . . .
I have to work on . . .

I am still waiting for mine to start competiton. I have no special idea except my painting shall remain as already done for Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond other minis.
I have a question for every one: What is written on papers on the table ?

Today I received a package from the Ireland.... next week I'm going to buy new colors and during the Christmas and New Year holidays I will try to paint this beautiful piece of Mithril.... on the papers on the table would be written part of middle earth history... for me... but we can imagine a handful of secret thoughts from kingdom of Valar....

The big scrolls could be a maps. One of the whole Northwest of Middle-eart (the big one) and the other one of Mirkwood (because the Necromancer's presence). And the small one (is it a book?) could have some tengwar-like scripture.

A map was also my intention, Master Arthadan. The right choice in this case.
Somekind of a elvish edition of Midle-Earth. Or a closer look to Rhovanion. Or in fact Thror´s map! As you pointed out.
Well, are there really eight chairs o paint . . . uff. A kind of boring . . .

To prevent that every contest-partner will show a Orthanc base . . .
Could it be imaginable that the White Council took place at different places? Maybe at Rivendell. Maybe at Lothlorien . . . Maybe elsewhere . . .
What do you think?

I may just go for a combination Master Turambar for a bit of contrast.

, I want the best of both worlds Master Tree, hopefully all will become clear. While we're here, I recall that a map of Middle-earth was posted that showed an 'extension' of ME. Are you able to recall where this map was posted please?

Sorry, I just had to go to my study to find out ....
I think the best that might help you about maps based on Tolkien is
"The Atlas of Middle Earth" by Karen Wynn Fonstad
published 1991 ... I don't know if that book still is available. But it't a marvellous source.

Yes, I have that one Master Tree, but I thought I saw posted somewhere an extended 'interpretation' of what ME may have looked like, but since asking I may have found this image anyway.
As you say, KWF's book may be best for what I need it for, many thanks

Excuse me for jumping in. The map you are refering to is the Ambarkanta (meaning "Shape of the World"). It's a chapter in The Shaping of Middle-earth, the fourth volume of The History of Middle-earth series, which includes an sketch by Tolkien himself:
For a detalied well-thought map based on this one and its evolution through the Ages of Arda, I recommend the articles in issues number 1 and 2 of Other Minds Magazine.

You are always welcomed to jump in, Master Arthadan!
Still for me: Master of the links !
I think I know what David is asking about. I can´t remember either. But I have a look at my screenshots and found this:
If I remember right, Gavin could help here. Or our Elf!
PS: David, if you need some of these pics, don´t hesitate to drop me a line . . .

Nice links Arthadan. I think the second one is too close to our own earth evolution...

Considering which maps to fit the scene one should keep in mind what the second meeting of the White Council (T.A. 2851) was about. I think it doesn't make much sense that a "global map" was of any interest, as the core of the discussion was focused on a certain region.
I think that the two larger opened scrolls on the table have to be maps. The third, small one, could be a map, too, maybe showing details of a fortress. I don't think that the Istari were in need of written documents then. Though in the MV360 we have a globe and 3 books at Saruman's place.
These are just my ideas.

I think all of us could choose one different map to draw it or paint it on MB560... there is enough maps for everybody and our imagination could choose what ever we want in whole Middle earth...

Mapping is always a topic I'm willing to jump onto
The Fonstad atlas is excellent - especially where the Northwest is considered. For the - more or less vague - remainder of the continent, it has certain weaknesses 8without wanting to lessen her work!). Not only for the scarcity of original information, but also for conclusions on that. The good point to acknowledge is that she was aware of more recent evidence and thus significantly altered her world map between the 1st and 2nd editions of her work.
A good example of an academic approach: The state of the Tolkien lore is evolving and not static. For this insight alone she deserves high merits. I'm sure that she would have considered updating the atlas even a second time - so sad she passed away so early
Especially the article in Other Minds 2 (and to a lesser extent the one in OM1) deals with the original evidence of the world design, plus the merits (and weaknesses) of Karen Fonstad's approach.
A great problem (obviously) is the unfinished state of world design that Tolkien left us. But as already mentioned: For everyone interested in Tolkien world mapping, the two articles in OM1 and 2 are highly recommended
Cheers

Thank you all for the responses to the map question and the sample maps, sorry I haven't responded earlier, sadly our dog has to have a major operation tomorrow to remove a tumour so being online and painting hasn't been a priority as the day draws near, but back to topic, all will (hopefully) be revealed come the finished peice.
Interestingly enough I also found a nice map at the front of the Tolkien Bestiary which looks quite good (Numenor is not the correct shape, but the book was probably produced before actual maps of Numenor were published) and may also suit my purposes.
Anyhow, now to study the images that have been posted.
