Re: The Taproom

Are you all sure about this casting quantity business? Everything about the promotion of the MS figures certainly IMPLIES that the number given is it, and there will never be any more. And if recasting was theoretically "allowed", how come Halbarad has never been recast? - he's been unavailable for ages. Sorry, but it doesn't make sense to me!

Re: The Taproom

Maybee Halbarad will be another M16 with the exception it would be artificial. roll
Or the mould is broken, or the factory misplaced the mould, or they couldn't be bothered to cast a new batch, or they just didn't change it on their website, or they changed the website in the first place by mistake.....
Any more quuestion?  It's Mithril for god sake!!!! No one knows what they are doing, not even Mithril themselfs!lollollol

For me either. Why Michael undertook to advise if there are few figures MS for members had the opportunity to acquire one? Then if Mithril can do more, it doesn´t make sense to tell when there are few....roll
And there is a thing that worries me more: Mithril is which "speculate" with prices, limiting production to make prices rise and selling figures to 19.95 € when the real cost is 6.99 € (if we take the price of the figures of the last serie-M). Is that why not issue new series- M and all the figures reduced to the GF? hmm

Yeah, I know I'm free to not accept these conditions, but all this seems unethical .....

And I'll shut up .....

Santé Holger.
Regarding Master Erchamion's remark on prices, I guess MS price allow the irish company to survive without extra efforts nor even any investments. As written here before, we can do nothing about that exept share our frenesy and make something good with it. lol

Re: The Taproom

After reading Wendy's comment above, I wonder how many castings of Halbarad were made. Did he sell out due to mould problems or popularity? I always thought it a little strange that only one figure had ever sold out completly.

Yes, and on that subject I notice that MS519 Bard and the Thrush isn't showing up as 'Sold Out' on the Mithril site, which is strange if it has...

Halbarad was planned to be a 250 figure series; the mould broke after about 60 castings. The 250 number is an arbitrary limit. They could probably make more or less. The idea is that they'd break the mould after the limit is reached to create an artificial shortage, so as to benefit collectors. They don't cast all 250 at once (I rather suspect they use the less sturdy moulds for such short runs); probably they cast batches of 30 at a go. Which means if the mould breaks when casting figure number 34, the ultimate limit on that figure is going to be 33.

But since "officially" they have committed to making 150 of the later fellowship range, they can just make another mould of the second master. They might not make the full 150 castings, but they will try to keep up with demand.

For reference, Chris Tubb sculpts the original in plasticine. This is shipped to mithril where the mould is created. The original is destroyed in the moulding process. But they probably do make a second master in metal for emergencies.

Thanks Barley.  smile  I'm around but don't say much.  The Ranger in the dark corner knows what project is occupying my time.  Sometimes being a perfectionist has its drawbacks, especially when there are many, many little holes to be drilled.

Hmm, do I have a knack of suggesting figures doomed for mould failure?  roll  I finally got around to buying Bard in the latest, greatest sale.

Seriously, only 60ish Halbarads were made??  I still think another Halbarad needs to be made, Fellowship or regular release, I don't care.

...with this information about only 60 figures of Halbarad I could only conclude that this is pity result of great project. This is marvelous figure and I'm happy to own one of this 60 sold by mithril. Who knows maybe one day it will be famous such a M16.....

Re: The Taproom

Hello patrons. Hi Wendy, here we are: Hockey season again! Like you, I am around, here in my dark corner.

I agree with Holger, Mithril is Mithril . . . no rhyme, no reason! We can get frustrated (and rightly so, Master Ent, when things are said and turn out to be inaccurate, even if unintentional). We can try to reason with the company, meaning Lars. As has been pointed out, Chris and Michael do not control decisions on releases. In the end Lars will do what he thinks is the best for him and his companies. Remember, Mithril is a very small part of Lars' businesses, and Chris has many other commitments as well. Also, the employees of Mithril are PA employees, not dedicated to Mithril only. So Gildor, you have many good ideas (most of which I agree with completely, especially as many are just common sense) for Mithril. But perhaps these are not so good when looked at by Lars when considering his businesses and his personal time. Perhaps he doesn't want to spend the time, or use capital and human resourses to expand this product line. But as long as we are willing to pay high rates per figure once a month, with maybe a M range once a year or so, he'll keep it going because he makes money at these prices and Chris is willing to do it. This is my impression, although I may be wrong.

As I mentioned this summer, the Wilderland series prototypes have been made by Chris. This was to be released a year or more ago, but apparently Lars never approved full production and release. The reason wasn't licensing, I know for a fact. So it can only be that Lars doesn't think the figures can be sold profitably, or that it is more profitable to pursue other activities. Perhaps the uproar over the prices they tried to charge on the first Helm's Deep release was enough that Lars decided to reduce the price of that release to appease us, but will not release any more M series. The cost of raw materials has skyrocketed in the past two years, and the global economy is weak right now. I am afraid that if we want more M series we may have to pay more for them than e6.99 each.

So let us not bash our heads against the wall. We have an excellent sculptor whose works we enjoy, and who knows how long Mithril, or even Chris, will continue in this area. At least through the Hobbit movies, I expect. But perhaps not much longer. As for MS figures being special, like many have said, every figure created is special to several GF members, or else it wouldn't have won the votes. We can choose to buy the GF figures produced or not. We can't force them to produce more M series figures, or sell them at unprofitable prices. I am going to enjoy these figures while they last. But like others here, I will do what I can to promote the continuation of Mithril.

Barli, I'll come out of the dark corner to raise my glass in a toast to our Fellowship! Of course this round of drinks is on me. Old Winyards out of the Southfarthing, if you have it. I will pay you back by patrolling the Wilderness area around the Pony, keeping the ruffians away.

Re: The Taproom

This is one big but sad fact and true Master Twirch. Sadly but it is. I hope mithril will be alive for a while but with all those market indicators I predict maximum 5 years with this combination of releases. MS will probably stay for a longer period. I hope one day Chris would have enough health in his calm arms to produce figures even in his own company....

Re: The Taproom

I agree with all of the above. I wonder what Lars would consider an adequate profit margin on a Mithril figure, and what price that would put on each figure? I genuinely believe that the Helms Deep 1 figure price was hiked up way above what we would consider a reasonable margin. Obviously we can't dictate what the price "should" be, but I wouldn't personally kick up too much of a fuss if the prices were on a par with what GW charge - though this admitedly varies dramatically (and illogically!) from figure to figure - but superior figures at the same price would seem to be a win-win situation.

Re: The Taproom

All I ask is honesty from Lars bey saying what are his objectives... rather than let us think he CARES for Mithril (even if he has other things to attend) .... let him give his own definition of "care" and then I'll agree or not...

I understand all that has been said, but these remain speculations, both from me when I give my points... and also from twrich when he speculates about Lars way of  thinking.... either of us could be right, or wrong

Will Lars be honest , or is he afraid to loose support from collectors by being honest... He knows some of us work hard on trying to change things in a positive way... it would be easy to say "you know, that's really appreciated  but it is not necessary nor worthy BECAUSE.... " and it is this "because" i am waiting for...

you use the fact "you are free to buy it or not".... I already mentionned that point in the past and already said why this "freedom" was REALLY subjective....

Either I collect... or I stop collecting... If I stop collecting it means 1) the collection is over  2)I loose interest in the collection..
in case 2... my collection would soon be seen entirely on ebay... because I don't care for a collection I have lost interest into... but it would really need a lot of disapointment and upset to loose an interest I have had for nearly 20 years...

When you collect there are times you know an item is a "collectible" and you have to get it even if the item does not please you... with GF we have the opportunity to make the collectible something desire-able  but some people have to understand the "collection process"...true collectors are NOT free to buy an item or not... the only thing they have is to be Happy or Upset with what they buy...
