Re: The Taproom

My good barkeep, you have got me thinking.  I'll do some research and then see if it's worth doing.  In addition to landfill space, one also has to consider the environmental costs of washing all the cloth diapers (huge amounts of water AND fossil fuels to create the electricity to heat the water and run the machines).

I'm just saying that there are pros and cons to each situation.

My guess is that cloth is still environmentally friendlier, but I'll do some research.

Thank you for provoking thoughts!  smile

... ahem... still waiting for that drink... service around here...

Re: The Taproom

some stats do exist indeed smile but the most striking fact is that... if you have a second child... you can still use your cloth diapers... this is not true in the case you throw them away each time... In addition there are costs... cloth diapers are far more economic.... I did not choose this solution only for environmental purpose it has also a strong economical impact....

beside, you can wash more than a dozen diapers in a single machine, and the amount of water used depends mostly on the texture of the sheets (the degree of impermeability... that would be a bit long to explain) and also the environmental properties of your machines smile

Re: The Taproom

Glad to have got some of your brains ticking over! The fact is, all the really environmentally damaging things we do result from us being lazy and looking to make our own lives easier. If we accept that enduring a little bit of "hardship", in terms of expense or extra work, is doing the planet at least some good, then that's a first step.

The other thing to ask yourselves is what sort of planet do you want your children to be living on when they get to our age. At the moment it's going to be a polluted, over-crowded dustbowl - in many places it already is - with few trees and very little joy. I don't think that's something they'll thank us for.

OK, lecture over (.....for now).

The new barrel is broached, and the mugs are lined up waiting to be filled. Sorry, didn't mean you fellows - but then again...

Thanks a lot , Gildor!

And obviously, congrats to OriginalAragorn too! It's so amazing see that your baby is in good shape (and your wife too). The capability of little child to regain strengh never stop suprise me.

About this fascinating talk about diapers, I only have to say that I changed some of them to my nieces, but definetily I'm not an authority on this question... But, hey, I'll keep reading about, who knows... never it's too late to learn and maybe my fiancée and I will change our point of view about having children smile

Best regards,

Re: The Taproom

As for the nappies...

There was a Montreal company (probably still is) which offered an eco friendly nappy service. They'd crunched the numbers and worked out the best balance of energy usage, pollution and whatever and worked to that. The service wasn't cheap, but it was very reliable and eco friendly. Friends recommended it highly.

Re: The Taproom

Huoommm ... I have to correct here, Master Elf, the Christmas figure was Sharkey, but not Grima ... huoommm ... what's right about this is that there so far is no Grima-figure killing Sharkey .... here you're right again ....
Alas, Master Milo, I also do like your suggestion very much indeed - honestly ... rhuoomm ... I really do not regard this as a kind of competition .... huoommm ... Ents can wait ... huomm ...
