Re: THE TAPROOM 2

they will never have it password free, don't count on it... it requires some sort of membership, bronze membership, and since their official board does not allow for "flagging" individuals for special access... like it is the case here... maybe I should tell michael to put this system in place rather than having password protection...
a bit like the Ekkaia and Mandos sections...

I still think you need to be registered and have to login that way but maybe the separate password for the M Series part is a bit much?

It would go against the spirit of the whole exercise to make it too easy roll !

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

it would be easier to have flags and let people have access to whatever they are entitled to have access.... when they simply log in.... be it GF or regular M suggestions...
but I'd go against access for anonymous personnaly, and I'd keep the GF flag special, but in my mind when I suggested the project, the suggestions and votes for the M range should have been open to anyone who Wants to participate (and thus registered as user)

but....Lars... is Lars...

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

This is how it works on global market... I do not like all of those GW figures... they are only polished copy of the characters from the film, not from books.... and sentence:  "Their products reflect the true spirit of 'The Lord of the Rings' franchise and, as anticipation builds for the release of 'The Hobbit,' the property's loyal fans will be excited for these richly inspired offerings."
I will vomit on this shallow marketing.... but this unfortunately works in global industry... give buttock or admit defeat. Mithril is an art, and art is expensive. Chris is an artist, and they are expensive.... on the end we will admit defeat and have only MS figures... sad

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

To be fair - as I always try to be - whatever one thinks of GW or the movie interpretation of characters from the books, GW still manage to  produce some excellent figures (and some that are less good...). I don't personally believe that the Perry twins are any less talented than The Man in terms of artistry; the only problem is that their imaginations are shackled by the interpretation they're presented with by the filmakers. As you say, Master Thingol, the GW range are movie based. They've never claimed them to be based on the books.

The extension of the GW licence is old news, though - it's been known for many months (even that memo is dated February). More of a problem for GW is the fact that their figure sales have plummeted since they shifted to resin casting and hiked their prices almost as high as Mithril's. I imagine that will have a significant impact even on sales of the Hobbit figures when they're released.

I'm sure we'll all shed a few tears about that.

Well, Master Barliman, what you said is exactly the truth.
I follow you also concerning other artists like the Perry twins,
Unfortunately my language-abilities are limited this evening, so I only can say:

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

I totaly agree with Barliman, the price increased of GW (and the poor quality of resin's minies!!!!) , is the best news of the year for mithril!

For the quality of GW mini's, there  is two diferent wiews of the Tolkien's book, you could or not like it ,  but the perry's mini's are at the best level of miniatures sculpting.

for me i use to collect both mithril and GW ranges, because, they have the same origin, the Tolkien's books, and two differents  vision of them!

regards
paco

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

the problem about GW but also Heldorado, or even other 32mm from Andrea (not the 54mm) or citadel, or whatever you want...

is realism...

I like Mithril because it respects the same rules as Historical miniature reproduction (like Pegaso or Andrea 54mm)  the other companies use "rules" for fantasy sculpting about head sizes, hand sizes, shapes of faces, proportions of body making the figurines "fantasy" but not "realistic"... and this is not always due to the originality of the sculptor, but done on purpose as shown on certain sites about how a fantasy figurine should be sculpted and modify the body proportion to that effect...
I simply don't like those proportions and fantasy aspects... I love mithril (and Chris works besides mithril) because, though the inspiration comes from fantasy worlds, the figurines are totally realistic and matching the reality of sizes... (well, at least about all humanoids) Even those hobbits, however odd they may be, look realistic and the orcs and trolls too...

Alas, the only over-realistic figurine is .. the Mumak... trying to respect "real world" elephant scale, it does not fit the proper size at all, but since Mithril only uses metal I could not imagine a "rightly-sized" Mumak, with its "castle" on his back and dozens of peoples on it, all in metal... too heavy... too expensive and not balanced at all... actually I even think the Mithril Mumak did quite some counter-promotion to Mithril, as opposed to when GW released their own Mumak... it was a good idea to make one, but doing it this way hurt Mithril a lot I think

no other company or sculptor use such realism technique in 32mm scale...

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

No, I'm not a fan of The Man's Hobbits - they look a bit too "Victorian Chocolate Box" cute for my tastes. Other than the Wild Men of Druadan Forest (who should be way more stocky and "pigmy-like") they're the only one of his Tolkien interpretations that displease me.

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

well I suppose you mean the head of hobbits wink their hair and their cheeks, I too have some problem with this...

and also when it comes to paint hobbit girls' dolls.... a BIT too small to be easy to paint with precision...

but the druadan woses, and hobbits appearance that Chris uses comes from MERP and Angus McBride mostly... and since it is very important for both mithril and Chris to respect continuity in the range... he will carry on using same aspect for races or characters that have existed since M1....

Radagast mounted, and the MS Isildur with long hair being the sole exception I think...

I hadn't recognised the link with Angus McBride's interpretation of the woses and hobbits - I shall have to dig out the ICE books and take a look. But that would certainly explain it.

And, Master Thingol, don't be too rude about Lobelia's hairspray - it's the secret ingredient of my Special Reserve scrumpy. Gives it that extra sticky quality.

the angus mcbride trolls are very different from chris tubb's interpretation. while i like them, angus mcbride's ones are the cream of the crop, in my opinion -- not to mention the gw ones.

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

That makes it an extra shame that The Man didn't stray from the McBride wild man and hobbit interpretations, if he was prepared to with the trolls! And yes, Master Cameosis, the ICE trolls are certainly impressive.

My scrumpy is just the same as every day. Whether that's good or otherwise is a moot point. But it is a new barrel - the last one started to grow tentacles, so I thought I'd better throw it out.
