Re: The Taproom

Wendy, you should keep suggesting Angbor as I really want that figure as well. wink

So, Barli you have three wins, well that is three more than me!big_smile
I know that I will win one day, but sometimes the ones that win(and I am opening this can of worms), are a little on the weird side for me. I am not saying they are dumb suggestions, but ones that I never would have thought would be made. I won't say which ones, but you might know what I mean.

Re: The Taproom

I know what both of you mean. But if no one suggested any figures, there'd be none to vote for, or the 'wrong' ones would win more often than they do...which is why I try to make sure that I suggest something every month. Happily I don't think too many 'wrong'uns' have got through so far - and since enough people have voted for even those ones to win, I just have to accept that on such occasions it may be me that's in the wrong (or at least in the minority...)

No names, no pack-drill, as my father used to say.

And the Marshal is right, Wendy - you must suggest Angbor again - though he's another one that needs to be mounted, which means that, like JD's hornblower, he's not eligible at the moment, alas.

As for me, I still wait for my chance to submit the crowning of King Elessar on "open month"... though I doubt it will ever have a chance to pass sad sad  That would be a kingly vignette though sad

Huooommmm ... as I lately was discussing with Master Gildor another matter it came to my mind that you, Master Barliman, are the right person to find an answer .... huoommm ... the question was about the name for that strange weapon Zalg is holding with his right fist ... hom ...
something being hold with the fist and providing a hooked and pointed metal device ... rhuoommm ... any idea?

You're right, Mistress Wendy, I had completely forgotten the Ent! (memory like a lumber room, etc...) I guess three victories is nothing to complain about, but I'm a long way from beating the invincible Dave's record!

You knew the fish would rise to that one Barli wink Invincible indeed, I think on my reckoning that I've got five in the keep-net, so you've only another two to go, or three if it's a match, lol.

But JD, I think most would agree it's the taking part that is the fun, not necessarily the winning (although it does give a nice glow inside and an excuse to celebrate down the 'Pony') and like Barli I try and suggest something most months to keep everyone on their toes so to speak and try and provide folk with more choice.

And like the good Bar-keep says (I think a certain Scottish king borrowed the phrase as well) if at first you don't succeed try, try and try again big_smile

I confess I'm partial to "canonical" characters.

I haven't given up on the fearless one yet, but I have been holding off for a mounted month (which may be a while in coming).  Since my suggestion last month was disallowed, I'd better think of a new one this month.  hmm

I'm waiting for the open month too, so I can suggest Bilbo riding on an unhappy Bombur's back again.  lol

Re: The Taproom

And on the subject of mounted figures, I'd still like to see both Pippin and Gandalf on Shadowfax, and Leggers and Gimmers on Arod - but particularly the Gandalf and Pippin combo now that we've got Ingold (I can feel a vignette coming on...).

And you can make light of it as much as you like, Master Daines, but didn't as many as three of your victories come in the space of about four months? And weren't at least two of them in consecutive months to boot? I may be slightly wrong in the exact details (memory like a lumber room etc ... or have I already said that?), but I'd call that a record. And is it the highest number of 'wins', in fact? Not so sure of that, but I can't think of anyone with quite so many off the top of my head.

Re: The Taproom

Nay, three victories in consecutive months.  A feat like that shall not soon be repeated.

(Gildor just posted the list of Fellowship winners in the library.  That's the only reason I have any knowledge of the subject, I might add.)

Re: The Taproom

sorry for being late, but I want to relate on a topic discussed between Master Barliman and Master Theobald on July 28th:
the Prince Imrahil figure. Reading this I started to have a closer look on these miniatures on the mithril side. Well, I can say I am called a lucky man- because I am an owner of the MX456-Frumgar- figure. As far as I concerned the most magnificent figure in the whole mithril range . . . big_smile
Reading the explanation text concerning the MX-thing you will find under point 4, that the mould of the master figure goes DISTROYED to the owner ! Having a closer look to the figures, especially to the horses, you will be able to recognize conspicuous commonalities . . . think about it.

Re: The Taproom

the mould may be broken but the master figurines which were used to create the mould, or the wire&greenstuff model prototype may remain?
using a master to create another master is not forbidden I suppose... by breaking the mould they just insure there are no more "retail castings" made ... But from the beginning, Chris Tubb has used the same "base" or position for many many figurines...

Re: The Taproom

In the Mithril range you will find a lot of horses with a very similar posture. Only the saddle and a few other things have changed, but this is a common thing to work with a basic model and change it to suit the style of rider. And well, it is a great looking horese isn't it.

Re: The Taproom

you will notice, for example, that some horses from the dol amroth range are the same... only the knight is different

Re: The Taproom

on a different note, i was working on filling the database with the MS453 reference this afternoon and I noticed that Chris Tubb made a HUGE mistake...
to go with Thorin in the tomb, he provided a big axe.... but... it is supposed to be Orcrist, buried with Thorin, not a simple axe!
to be faithful to the book I assume one has to use a sword in scabbard from little "scattered" pieces from other references, and put a sword instead of this axe... thus only a variation of the original could be faithful..

Re: The Taproom

That is a bit of a blunder, isn't it? I'm surprised not only that it slipped past Chris, but that no one else has yet picked up on it (I can excuse myself by the fact that  I've not (yet) bought this vignette!). But then, there are mistakes in other Mithril figures too - in fact it would be interesting to hear from any of my patrons who've encountered particular bugbears of this kind that especially irk them!

I'll start the ball rolling by mentioning the fact that 90 per cent of Chris's Orcs have bare feet, whereas the ONLY times JRRT ever draws our attention to Orcs' feet he tells us that they're wearing shoes...

Re: The Taproom

I will mention M128 Boromir. In the book before the fellowship left Rivendell it mentioned what weapons they were carrying. It said that Boromir had a sword, horn and last but not least a SHIELD! Where is his shield at? Also, he has no shield with the M283 figure. (I think that is the number) smile

Oh, and to go with Barli's comment look at the Merp Riders of Rohan cover. Look at the orcs feet, they have shoes on. wink

Re: The Taproom

now there is also the problem of heraldry for the shields... but the problem may come from a licence problem...
though the white horse on green background for rohan is well known, and the white tree on blue background for gondor royal shield too...  shields for Elendil and Gil-Galad are not the same in the whole mithril range (Gil-Galad has two different shields in LR10 and MS435  but both are false... JRRT had done heraldry design for all major houses of men and elves (especially noldor elves) but that MAY be outside of Tolkien Enterprise licences...

Re: The Taproom

It really doesn't mention the shield in detail, so I am thinking that it was just a plain shield with no markings on it.

Re: The Taproom

The precise design of every elven (and some edain) heraldry for the houses of Fingolfin and Finarfin have been drawn by JRR Tolkien himself in his illustration books , there are quite many of them...  smile but that's mainly "1st Age work" and outside of any licence own by Tolkien Enterprise...
Here is a link on a detailed site talking about it : http://www.forodrim.org/gobennas/heraldry/heraldry.htm
