Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

You're right what you say, Estel. The work must be analyzed at the end, even among friends is always interesting comment on the step by step.....winksmile

Another thing, I remember that all the Hobbit´s dwarves were of Durin's House and they were from the Ered Luin, in Eriador, where found refuge the wandering dwarves of this House .....

As I told before: let´s see them in action . . .

A short but very welcomed visit by Estele! That means: he is still around.

Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

I have to correct you Estel... there are indeed 7 dwarves families.... but ALL of the Thorin & Co. are from the Durin's House.  almost all of them being cousins actually.

that does not mean there could not have been mix in the house but almost all of them are relative to Durin VI himself and so that makes them "truebloods" toward Durin's House.

the Other houses did not dwell in Khazad Dum but in Belegost, Nogrod or other dwellings in the east... the only dwarves I know about who were not from Durin's house were Telcar, Gamil Zirak, and Mim, Kim and Ibun....

But in the end I agree, the dwarves look better in the movie than on pictures... Still, they should not taken apart in terms of culture, they all come from dwellings in the blue mountains and from the same clan.

Well, well a lore discussion. I have to jump in!

As you have noted, the Blue Mountains where the awakening place of two Dwarven Tribes (the Broadbeams and the Firebeards), while the First Tribe (the Longbeards, Dúrin's) was Mount Gundabad in the Misty Mountains. So, if Thorin's companions came from the Blue Mountains there is a good chance that some of them belonged to the other two Tribes. Let's take a closer look:

- Thorin II: Longbeard for sure, related to Durin himself.
-Glóin, Dori, Ori, Nori, brothers Balin & Dwalin, brothers Kíli and Fíli, Óin: Longbeards.

- Bifur, Bofur and Bombur:

Of the other companions of Thorin Oakenshield in the journey to Erebor Ori, Nori, and Dori were also of the House of Durin, and more remote kinsmen of Thorin: Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur were descended from Dwarves of Moria but were not of Durin's line.

-Lord of the Rings Appendix-

Assuming the three are related, I think they would belong to the Broadbeams (Bombur at the very least!). Anyway, Longbeards were quite scattered, from the Iron Hills to the Blue Mountains (and maybe there were some left in the Grey Mountains), so it makes sense than each community has developped some characteriscal aspect (and more so each individual).

Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

not of durin's line does not mean not of durin's house but not from his direct family... indeed you could be right too but no one will know....

Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

Durin's line is Durin's house as everybody from Durin's house is from Durin's family.

Saw the movie above and well, I still don't like it, sorry

Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

Which is purpose of this discussion. Family trees or dwarves design...This will be just another great made blockbuster...I am sure I will enjoy it more than 100%... on big screen TV... BlueRay... 3D cinemax cinema... etc... and than I'm sure dwarves will look different than those in this picture... when we see them in motion, in environment full of details, activities and actions. I'm sure everything will look a lot better.... As Master Estele mentioned.. This is still not final work... Those dwarves look funny now... and in this point I'm agree with spider lady.....

Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

Just back from travelling to the Lonely Mountain, so my first viewing of this, thanks for posting smile. I guess like it or lump it, this is what the dwarves of the film will look like and life will go on. I have to admit seeing the sequences has made me view the dwarves in a different light than my first impressions.

I guess I had it ingrained in my mind that characters more in keeping with the style of the book would be order of the day, but with some reservations I am warming to the characters.

I do hope Orchrist will be a proper sword and not a Samauri style sword as depicted in the Last Alliance elves, but time will tell.

Did you notice that the dwarves will be having a mini skirmish at the Troll-Fells so I guess this part of the book has been altered, will they blindly walk into the arms (sacks) of the Three Trolls and await Gandalf's rescue or will it be a self help job?

I loved the last clip of Christopher Lee making a comment about Peter J lol

Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

Remember Glamdring is a traditional longsword - but one with a very Elf-ish leaf like design. I suspect the blades of Gondolin were more "traditional" (in the local of the movie), but the blades of Lindon are the "two handed samurai-ish sword we see in the movies. Possibly there was some sort of material cultural tradition amongst the Elves of the Falas as opposed to the Elves of Gondolin. Perhaps one was Dwarven influenced, the other more experimental?

Re: THE HOBBIT MOVIE

Thank you Erchamion for that video! I am feeling a bit better now, when both versions of dwarfs (little and bigger) came on the stage at almost the end of the video, they seemed much more tolkien related than in the previous shots!!

I was really afraid for that Thorin picture, as he was resembling VERY much to a Klingon!

Thank you Thingol for heading me back here! wink

I like the dwarves considerably more now that I've seen them en masse - I particularly like the Bombur characterisation!
