I bought a set of needles for models in Czechoslovakia in 1989. Made of russian steel. All of them are still strong and sharp....

My most recent set were cheap Chinese steel, and suffered the consequences. There's no point to them any more (a Bree pun).

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

finally received my parcel! at last... but I am perplex, it seems to me (though it is hard to notice it...) that the figurine scale is slighly... just slightly smaller than what mithril used to be....or is it the sculpting art... but the faces for example seems... smaller especially Thranduil.

I was received e-mail on my request with Michael's confirmation, that parcel will not leave Ireland before 1st of July and somebody sent me package by mistake on 21st this month. Today before noon parcel was in my house.... it was less then 48 hours on their way to Croatia.... and no custom taxes, no custom procedure... smile This is what I call "FAST Delivery service".... big_smile

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

... I've also noticed that the figures are slightly decreased.... they are trying to save a little on the weight of metal.... Pity. Otherwise, when I received a vignette in my hands, I realized how great it is... magnificent idea...

So will all future Mithril releases be in this diminished scale, do you think?

I sincerely hope not. It is also very easy to see the big difference in the weight of the metal. These figures seems are made of light metal for soldering.... Elves are certainly a little squeezed. In particular, these figures on chairs ! But anyway... great figures indeed...

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

well if they want to make economy on metal, they'd better not include the "metal spurs" inside the package.. there is almost as much metal spurs in this package as "figurines" themselves... quite a loss of metal...

the metal used seems to be the same used by Chris for the Phaeton releases, it does seem lighter and more detailed... maybe its the fat it is not undercoated but I feel there is a difference...

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

... you are right Gildor.... there is a difference.. ! I hope this is not new mithril policy and that it will not affect the MS releases...

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

well i am more worried about the scale/sculpting change because it would affect the whole range (scale is important for dioramas) , the metal used for phaeton and the current release provides great detail quality so I have nothing against it provided they keep undercoating the "normal" figurines...

as for scale I checked the "height" size of humans and hobbits ... their height does match... it is the proportions of hands, feet, heads, legs..etc that seems... thinner

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

Could they have "shrunk" in the mould during casting? I'm no expert, but I gather this sort of thing does happen.

Sorry Barli, a mould doesn't shrink during casting. roll

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

Er, I didn't say anything about the mould shrinking. Of course moulds can't shrink. My point was that I've heard it said that it's possible for castings to shrink in the mould.

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

Almost all metal castings shrink a little depending on the co-efficient of expansion of the alloy. Some alloys shrink much less than others depending on the constituent metals. Partly due to a low melting point (the less the alloy has to cool the less shrinkage there will be), partly because the metals act differently when mixed. The original PA/Mithril alloy shrank very little but was expensive. I don't know if was changed but that might explain slightly smaller figures.
And as it's too late even for second breakfast, I'd share a glass and supper with Milo. Glad to help.

Re: THE TAPROOM 2

Thank you for the very clear explanation, Master X - worth a pint any day. I've certainly seen shrinkage on Mithril figures in the past - I have two half-orcs I bought years ago of which one is like a starved or squeezed version of the other, which would seem to match Master Gildor's observations re the Bilbo + Arkenstone set.
