Re: The Taproom

As it seems, that many have 'problems' painting Orc's flesh:
I think there is no need, that any Orc has exactly the same skin colour- to me Orcs are chaotic creatures only kept together by brutal ways and cruel masters. That could be reflected in the orcish skin tone. For the ones, who like Orcs skin more a little "greenish" in it, try drybrushing with GW's rotting flesh colour. It is also a good idea, to mix a small pot of colour, if you like a special tone.

What I want to comment: I like it very much, that folks in here does not like the green-skinned-type of a funny creature. This is not Tolkien, Orcs are cruel, are evil and bad creatures, destroying, raping and so on and I do not want to meet an Orc in my life.

So let's have a drink! CHEERS to you all.
And please Barliman, no green beer!!

Re: The Taproom

The Green Orc thing apparently dates back to the Hildebrant brother's illustrations of scenes from The Lord of the Rings. Everyone else stole from that - particularly Warhammer.

Tolkien describes the orcs as having "black" - which I interpret as being an inhuman dark grey colour, rather than a warm dark skinned human colour - though mottled is also mentioned.

Re: The Taproom

I tend to like very dark brown (almost black), to grey washed with black, but green - never!!!!!!big_smile I actually like the orcs from the films as well (Gothmog, well not so much) and personally felt that the light flesh tones that some of them had worked well (even if not as per JRR's description). I'm not sure how well that would look on a Mithril figure though I guess you could see plenty of examples in GW stores.

Re that newsletter, I'm sure I didn't get it through in the form it appears on the Mithril site, I have had some stuff through, but maybe I missed a link, but at least it answers my question about how did some people know that there was another extension to the painting comp.

And congratulation Rita.de on joining such a fine body of men (and woman) in the GF.

On a another point there was mention of the new edition sizes of 150 figures. Thinking about this it is quite a worrying thought that if only 150 figures are released and the GF by now must exceed that (I think), I hope this will not lead to situations where some members cannot get a figure because it is no longer available.

I personally cannot see a reason for producing this number - if Mithril are worried that they may not sell all of them could they not cast up the usual number but not undercoat them so that if they don't sell they go back into the melting pot? Or is that line of thought too simple?

Re: The Taproom

Its probably the working cost?

Looking at the available Fellowship minis, not many seem to be sold out, so I am sure they have taken the Fellowship number and orders into consideration. Its a bit sad that only 150 seem to be sufficient. Anyway, lets enjoy the show and hope that it does not close down due to a lack of demand. I just got myself the backlog of minis from the last 6 month. Nice, though one of the Knights of Dol Amroth was mispacked - I now have to swordsmen and lack a lance. No problem, though, I will just order a replacement, the double will find its place.

Re: The Taproom

Thanks for all the interesting observations regarding Orc flesh - they generally tally with my own thoughts, and dark grey (or variations thereon) certainly seems to be the most popular colour! - though as Dave says, the movies' pale or discoloured flesh (and 'blonde' hair amongst some of the Uruk-hai!) also seems to work well in a perverse kind of way, even if it isn't true to Tolkien's image.

So, the Hildebrandts are responsible for green flesh, then? I never did like their pictures...

Ireland is very green (it's all the rain), so I'll forgive them.

Re: The Taproom

maybe this Orc has eaten something bad? or to much spinach?? Or a Leprachaun has cursed the Orc for having stolen his gold. Or the "photo-making machine" has had a greenish lense. Or John Fahey (if he had painted it) had a bad day. or.........

Re: The Taproom

Diverting you from this neverending story of orc-flesh-colored, I would like to put your attention of something that impend to fall into . . yes, into what ? Ähh . . .
Master Theobald, you have mentioned some days before mysterious pictures of King Brand and Ingold supposedly on the mithril homepage.
Is it possible to concrete this location?

Re: The Taproom

They're on the new newsletter on the Mithril website. I'm very pleased with Ingold! Brand is also very good too, but I'm inevitably biased towards my own Fellowship suggestion...

Re: The Taproom

Thank you famous Innkeeper, and thank you Master Tree for that quick information. Now I know for what this little word "Newsletter" is about . . . roll
I think being the freshest member of the fellowship was the right decision. I take also that kind of drink Theobald would prefer.

Re: The Taproom

Ah, so you haven't drunk scrumpy before, then, Master Rita.de? If you had you might want to think carefully before you drank it again. In fact you only have to read Master Theobald's last message on this page to see just how much it can addle the brain.

Come on, Master Tree - try to express yourself a little more clearly! What's all this about 999? Isn't that the Number of the Beast in Antipodean parts of the planet? Or do you simply mean you're in such dire need of lubrication that it's an emergency?

Re: The Taproom

I think I mentioned it before but I hope Ingold's right arm is suffering from the camera angle which makes it look out of proportion, I can't see CT getting the proportions wrong though.

All figures are looking good!

Re: The Taproom

Yes, they are. But does Brand look somehow, well, Victorian to anyone else, or is it just me? - He somehow reminds me of the sort of pictures of "Knights In Armour" that Gothic revivalists were drawing circa 1880. Still a nice figure, though.

Re: The Taproom

Rhuoommm ... it's not the proportions which are wrong ... huom ... it's simply because of that close-up shot with the camera focus, I'm sure .... rhuoommhom ... so you're right, Master Ddaines ... hom
as for Gothic revivalists I don't know them, Master Barliman ... rhuoommm .... I hope you didn't want to refer to them Pre-Raphaelites ... hom

Re: The Taproom

I like Barli's ale better than the scrumpy. Never did like finding rat hair in my beer. And please, Barli, don't blame it on Nob! Remember, I sit here in a dark corner and watch many things unnoticed. I've seen you spike the scrumpy with all kinds of unseemly things!

Re: The Taproom

Then I'm surprised, relieved and grateful that you only complained about the rat hair!

And no, Master Tree. The Pre-Rapahelites were talented artists who celebrated the beauty of medieval Italian art. The Gothic revivalists were a bunch of raving loonies who thought it was a wizard idea to build railway stations so that they looked like 15th century cathedrals...

Re: The Taproom

Well Master Bartender, it wasn't a complaint as much as an observation. I won't name the "unseemly things," aside from the afore mentioned rat hair, as I enjoy the good things about this establishment, and wouldn't want  to besmerch your scrumpy (or establishment)! Nob! Another ale please.
