Re: The Taproom

I got the same confirmation from the Man , Theobald...and that was very pleasant to hear (it appears Chris himself went to see how the primer was done, in the factory and convinced Lars that it was totally "unacceptable" and to change the primer with a brand Chris was using and had been proven worthwile! So this is solved once and for all!)
As a side note I should soon receive, hopefully, a picture of the "defeated Arvedui", which should have a very proper primer, and also he seems seems to work on another "large mithril project"  after the Unexpected Party (I have no details at the moment sorry)

I don't have any time to paint or work on mithril at the moment, and the travelling Elrond is just warm besides his fellow elves but I don't know when I'll be able to write up some entries in his diary and take some pics!

NB : master ent, the other day my little child said something very odd and strange indeed... some strange sound a bit like a ... "burarhuomm"... I fear there may be some entish blood in his veins!

Re: The Taproom

Huoommm ... yes, indeed, The Man is busy with some other major Mithril project. ...rhuoomm ...
as for the primer-problem ... rhuoommm ... it's solved, definitively ... so there will be a much more better quality of the primer being provided in future ... huoommm... very much better ... huom
though the not-priming of the MX-UP has nothing got to do with the primer-problem ... rhuoomm ... hom ... the figures are pegged on the feet rather than on bases ... huoomm ...
that way it is very difficult to have them stand up in the spray booth ... rhuoomm ... this concept leaves the availability to place each figure where you will, as the base will have no locator-holes ... rhuoommm ... though one piece will be sprayed for advertising ... hoommm ...
It's good to know that our Travelling Elrond has found a good place to stay ...
Rhuoommm ... Master Gildor, what Raphael wanted to tell you simply is:
"bura" = means 'you' ... "rhuomm" = means 'consider' - so all that is about is the fact that your son is aware of you being his father ... the double "m" also shows that he likes it ... as a triple "m" would denote some considering ... though I don't know where he learned that tongue ... rhuoommm ... anyway, you shouldn't "fear" about that, Master Gildor ... better is to enjoy ... huoommmrhuooomdom ... hom ...

Re: The Taproom

Like Gildor it is for me:

Little children keep you busy and away from small lead figures and Mithril related projects. Well but not from buying them.

THANKS to you all, who helped solving the primer problem. Also thanks  a lot to Chris for struggeling to solve this affair.
Concerning previews and new releases: Maybe it would  be possible to make a thread on the mmp-sites "on the workbench" like some other artists have?? So we can see some of Chris' "greens" and work in progress. I think it would be interesting, even if Tolkien enterprises does not allow production of that figures/sets etc. at the end. (e.g. Kev White has something like this: http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/wip.php - this example is not meant as an advertising by me!!)
What do you think?

Maybe I should take some time to send Chris a mail about that, bit I did not want to keep him away from designing wink .

Re: The Taproom

Well, Master Estel, there is only one thing to do:  supporting this !!!!
I remember a similar discussion of exactly this topic somewhere in april last year . . .
Having pics from the Man´s workbench would be paradise. Some people around here know how I like those workbench pictures.
To show the "work-in-progress (like Big Boris of Hersey miniatures do) would be especially for us mithril-enthusiasts a absolutely fantastic thing.
Let´s contact those of us who have this special contact with The Man . . . to inform him . . . to persuade him . . .

Re: The Taproom

I'm reminded of something Gandalf once said: 'Many folk like to know beforehand what is to be set on the table; but those who have laboured to prepare the feast like to keep their secret; for wonder makes the words of praise louder.'

And I agree. Nothing special would be gained from seeing The Man's greens being shaped (unless you're a gardener), and the actual figures are far more interesting when they come if you don't know every detail in advance. I have a suspicion that if we'd seen greens of the missing Easterling cavalry three years ago when they were produced we'd be a helluva lot more ticked off that they never  got into production! And life's too short to be that frustrated for years on end...

Re: The Taproom

Though the idea would be original... there are copyright problem and licences problem... we are, alas in the real world...
When the man sends me (or any of us ) in private, some pictures of "greens" or his workbench or any of his work in progess, he usually mentions clearly "please keep it for yourself" do not spread the info (and/or picture) to anybody... Promising to keep silent and keeping this promise is the base of a trust relationship and friendship in most cases....

Now why would the man want his "works in progress not to be unveiled"... there are several answers :
- licence problems (when it comes to figurines CLEARLY representing a Tolkien character) to release info and images on a "yet to be approved" sold-to-be material... (legal aspect)
- copyright and intellectual property of Chris Tubb artwork... Though I doubt we, serious and sympathetic folks would want to spoil anything, if the news of "work in progress" of material non disclosed by Mithril were to be known on the internet, well, I doubt we would use the design, the art the pose whatever is displayed to be used to release other materiel PRIOR to mithril release... that would be 'industrial espionnage" ... (as I said I doubt we would do that... but the rest of the internet would eventually be informed and register on this MMP forum to have access to these picture, try to reproduce it the best they can... and release it with other "names" not needing Tolkien Enterprise licence and thus released sooner...

all in all... It is too risky to display things before the "copyright&licence" are attributed to the figurine.... Since Chris Tubb seems quite upset about piracy lately, I think this would not be a good idea at all... Unless I could prove him I can build a completly safe "virtual space" on this website that NO one can reach without having been specificaly given exclusive access by me (after Chris acceptance) ... I don't mean a login/password but something stronger even... (stronger than the access to the GF forums).... Some among us may remember that some time ago we were attacked by a "band of orcs" and though I raised the great "warding shields of the Valar" against them, we can't assume Morgoth does not have intrusion force from beyond the doors of Arda ready to reach in from the Void...

as you can see, though this would  be marvellous to have such images... there are "dark side aspects" of  this... We must remember that Mithril is an enterprise linked to a very very "closed" licenced world (tolkien) unlike many other brands who do not have to licence their material before selling them...
there are less than 15 enterprises in the world to have a "permanent licence" with TE... and it is very very hard to get it... and VERY easy to loose it...

Re: The Taproom

And what about showing some miniatures of an upcoming release after they have been approved and are going to be released for sure? Something like a preview one or two weeks before they official anounce in Mithril's website to rise interest... and begin to save cash wink

Re: The Taproom

well as far as I know, Mithril themselves put them online once they get the approval themselves smile (well in the newsletter at least)
but indeed if not everybody has access to the newsletter, we could, I think, copy the GF pictures extracted from the newsletter wink

If the newsletter is exclusive for the Mithril Fellowship members, then I have no access to it. I'd be interested in take a look to the upcoming miniatures which may appear there, if possible.

Otherwise be sure, that new pics of new releases will be posted here on MMP immediately !!!!
But- it is not wrong being part of the fellowship . . . and it´s never too late joining the fellowship wink

Re: The Taproom

You're right, Master Rita. The newsletter is not for Fellowship members only. I'll subscribe now!

About the Fellowship, I was member of the original one, back in the day and I have all the old releases excepting the 54mm Galadriel. Now I'm not fond of the new pricey limited editions approach and I miss the Tengwar magazine, so I rather stick to the M series.

Re: The Taproom

Shame that there's not an equivalent magazine now. But times have changed.

Incidentally, what's with this bonkers Mithril sale? I say bonkers, because if they're trying to shift stock this isn't the way to do it. There are plenty of figures there that I'd LOVE to buy quantities of at reduced prices, but the way they've been grouped means that I'd have to also buy loads of figures that I DON'T want in order to get them - ergo, the prices for the ones that I DO want would end up being too high to justify the purchase!!! Why not just offer the figures individually at sale prices, and let people select the ones that they actually want?

I agree with you.. those bonkers sale as you say is probably concentrated on attracting new customers. Probably younger generation of potential Mithril kids... I also want to buy some of them but not this time... I have use 20% fellowship discount for completion of my collection... which is also announced until 28.01..... it will be more discounts through the year.... for sure...

Re: The Taproom

I would love to see the 'Greens' showing how Chris crafts his trade - Tom Meir (Thunderbolt Mountain) often posts images of his Greens which show off the skill of the sculptor AND in some cases interesting 'how they did it' techniques (this is what prompted me to grab some of his Orcs and a few other bits).

But I agree with the points about not wanting to muddy the waters for Mithril re license issues or for someone to inadvertently break a trust that Chris has placed by allowing a preview. Tom Meir I guess has a bit more freedom in this respect as the orcs and elves are his design concept whereas Mithril are under license.

All said and done, far better to suddenly have some new images spring up of completed and TE approved miniatures than have to 'stew' over miniatures that have been started but may never see the light of day for whatever reason.

Rita.de, try and sleep and do not lay awake thinking about Easterlings - we need you to chanel your energies into more masterpieces wink

I tend to agree with the comments about the sale - why not let folk choose what they want so that the offer is more attractive and more stock shifts (which is what MM must be after), or is it that some of the stuff wouldn't shift if it hadn't been offered this way? I haven't really looked closely at the figures in the sale I have to admit - trying to save my pennies for something special that's on its way;)

Re: The Taproom

Some quote of the new Mithril newsletter to discuss, I think:

"We have sent a set of the MX release to our painter Joe Fahey to paint a example, he has excellent knowledge of The Hobbit and will paint a perfect set to show just how detailed the release is."

I am not sure, if Mr Fahey is the right painter to do the job. Yes, I mean that. If you have a look at the painting qualities of some Mithril maniacs or painters in general, the painted examples of Mithril cannot withstand many of them. The painting community has changed and has grown up from the 80ies.

What do you think? Am I hypercritical in my thoughts?

AND CHEERS!!!

Re: The Taproom

I agree about the bonkers Mithril sale. You go to their website and you find the current sale, then you go to evilbay (a.k.a. e-bay, but it's evil because it makes me spend way too much! tongue) and you find they are offering reduced prices at the same time for yet another collections... so if you order from both places, you'll end paying shipping costs twice!  Or waiting for next month's promotion... to pay shipping cost again mad

Just a plain "10% discount for every 10 figures purchased up to 25% in all M and Classic references" would make happy most of us.
