Re: The Taproom

Huoommmm ... I did not misunderstand you, Master Gildor, not at all ... rhuoommm ... I even do share your pleasure in painting "characters", even within an army ... huoommm .. to be honest we experienced painting Mithril armies being different from that plastic-stuff that some other companies provide ... rhuoomm ... and in the 'Ent' it's what challenges some people to create very fine conversions based on Mithril figures to achieve this ... rhuooommm ...
I once painted the Mw336 and the Mw337 many years ago ... huoomm ... it was completely different from the experience I made painting them GW-masses ... rhuuoommm ... there was much more "individuality" in the figures (especially in the orc army) compared to the GW-releases, where you just can alter the appearance of single figures by colour .... rhuooommm
with this Mithril always has been much more better ... hom! .... mind the varieties given with the Lossarnach-release (arms, poses, weapons) ... huomm ... that was a brilliant concept for 'wargamers', I think ... huuuom ... me, I'm just a collector, as you might know by now ... hom

Re: The Taproom

Rhuoommm ... having attached the "parts" of King Brand by now I witnessed a mistake in the picture provided by Mithril .... huoomm ... as his shield is somewhat of a Norman-type and is held in the same pose as the one of Thranduil (MS462) the point of that shield should better be posed downwards ... rhuoomm ... as it makes more sense ... huomm ... not only because of covering major parts of the body ... such as brains ... huomm ... but also to reveil a falling dragon instead of a rising one ... rhuoommm ... I dunno who fixed the shield at the figure for that photograph .... rhuuoommm ... somehow he was wrong, meseems .... huoom .... the figure is brilliant .... huoommm ... absolutely brilliant, I think ... rhuoommm

Master Theobald, you have said so much about that shield, that my curiosity seduces me to ask you for a pic.
PS: Hello Jason. Good to know, that you didn´t fall into ( Helms ) deep.

Re: The Taproom

Afraid I have to let you down, Master Marshal - there's no Eomer on foot in the upcoming M range. But there is one in the Fellowship range, of course...

And one thing I'd add on the subject of painting Mithril (or come to that any other manufacturer's) armies, is that in no way do they need to all be painted the same! These aren't parade-ground martinets - they're warriors from a much earlier, dare I say scruffier, less efficiently administered age, with minimal commissariat arrangements; few would have worn matching trousers or undershirts, and even their uniform tunics - where such things were worn at all - are likely to have varied considerably in colour and cleanliness. Paint some patches on their clothing and add a little grime. There's immense leaway for all sorts of variations in dress! Let your imagination go a little - the end results can be very effective.

Re: The Taproom

Huoommm .... I do completely agree to your statement about painting armies, Master Barliman ... huom ... as that what you suggested is what I also try to achieve once I have the time to paint an army .... hom ... what I wanted to point out before was not about creating "individual" figures by painting alone but also about the possibilities to have different poses of similarly casted pieces as we have with the Lossarnach-army .... huoommm ....

Re: The Taproom

I quite understood your point, Master Tree. I just wanted to remind people that even identical figures can be made to look startlingly different by intelligent painting.

I see your bowl is empty again - and so early in the day. All this talking is obviously drying you out.

Huommrhuommm ... thank you, Master Barliman .... for keeping an eye on my empty bowl ... huoomm ... don't worry. I'm not drying out ... huoomm ... hom ... but it pleases me much to have that empty bowl being topped up ... rhuoommm ... oh, by the by 'your' Ingold is a wonderful piece of metal ... rhuuoommm-to-dommmhuom .... hommm!

He's definitely on board with the idea, and he has no choice now!  As I often remind him, it's not a household democracy and his vote doesn't count!  He does get a little more worked up about some little things than he used to, but he's still adjusting to not getting all the attention.  Things are going very well though!

Re: The Taproom

Speaking of babies reminds me of how amused I was when my friend Michael Perry the figure designer decided to call his first daughter Minnie (think about it...). When he had another daughter I suggested he should call her Minnie Minor, but on reflection he didn't think it was a good idea.

Re: The Taproom

Wow!!! this place has become very busy lately.

First, Congratulations, Mike on your new baby!

Next, thanks Theo for reminding me of that Grimbold, although not an M series release he still exists. Now to hopefully get an Elfhelm at some point.

Finally, I can concur with Barli regarding Chris and his "control" over what is produced. But it is also true that he understands the economics of his business, and there are some projects that he does for PA that he might not do otherwise except for the desire to get paid! And as for series that are started and put off, I can attest to that also. I know of at least two other M series besides the Easterlings that are in various stages of completion, and someday, hopefully, will be finished.

Re: The Taproom

Interesting - I only know of one such 'delayed/deferred' set; I wonder what the other one is?? I do know of two other definitely forthcoming sets and have pictures from both, so I don't imagine you're alluding to either of them. Hmmmm...

Either way, as I said in this very establishment last year, 2009 looks like it's going to be a good year for us, Mithril-wise.

Perhaps two old gaffer's sitting in the Pony in fifty years time would be saying, "2009, that was a good vintage year that was".

And another voice of agreement from this corner, I once knew a figure sculptor, Mike French of Tiny Troopers who although he sculpted in a larger scale than 32mm, would only sculpt what ever he (or his wife, lol) had an (artistic) interest in. Not quite the same when you are working for a company like Mithril, but I guess the theory is the same.

Many congrats, presto !!!

seems that  some of us are busy outside the Mithril hobby!! big_smile

Maybe we should count how many babies are born from mmp- members or their wifes lol
Would be nice statistics and  show that Mithril-collectors are mostly "wise ones" and not newbies....

Re: The Taproom

Yes, one day Max may be disappointed to learn that his inheritance will mostly consist of several hundred pounds of lead miniatures and some dried up paints.  wink

I'm looking forward to all these foreshadowed mithril releases being mentioned.  I'm going to have to scour the budget very carefully to finance some 2009 purchases, as I'm already a little behind on the MS figures, and haven't procured the Knights yet either hmm

I too have this vision of some descendant of mine going on Antiques Roadshow in the dim and distant future all excited by the thousands of Mithril figures they have inherited...

Yeah, I'm way behind with MS purchases, thanks to the crippling pound/euro exchange rate. It briefly improved on Friday, so I leapt in and ordered two figures, but sadly I pressed the wrong button on the order form and the order consequently only got processed today - and the exchange rate dropped back down in the interim. Typical Butterbur luck.

The prices of the MS figures are currently absolutely horrible unless you live in a part of Middle-earth that uses the euro - the two figures I committed to have just cost me £40 including postage. Those are almost eBay prices!

At this rate I'm beginning to harbour serious doubts about being able to financially justify  remaining a Fellowship member.

I may have to increase my bar prices. And you lot may have to start paying up quicker.

Re: The Taproom

If I had money, I'd help somehow - buy what you want in Euros and sell them to you in Sterling at some later point.

It helps (vaguely) for me to buy in euros with my Irish credit card and then get them shipped to Canada.

Ya know, I might be travelling to London in May or june. Maybe we could plot something.

That's a kind proposition, Master Gavin, and may be worth further consideration. But for now I shall cling to my misguided optimism that the pound must recover at some point in the next month or two. Or decade or two...or next century, or whatever.

My immediate crisis is that I still have to purchase two more figures for this 'year', now that the full dozen are out there, and I have to hope that the exchange rate improves at least marginally in the next few weeks to enable me to do that without having to sell Mrs B, Nob or the cat. It's touch and go at the moment, though.

On balance I'll probably keep the cat.

Re: The Taproom

about Spain... that reminds me.... we still have no news from Juegos Sin Fronteras about this 1989 christmas vignette... I'm still waiting for pics and info from them . Erchamion or other collectors in Spain had mentionned helping me on that matter . Are there any news?

Re: The Taproom

what do you say about this month's votes????????????? mad

A female Orc, a female assassin and Durin???

Where are all those very fine ideas of this month? sad

This may be the first time, I will not vote. Dwarves are o.K., but why not Bombur? Durin is surely o.k. but not one of those figures I was waiting for for years. Female Orcs????? Like Sauron some things should ever be done, even if Chris' vision is always great and comes close to mine concerning Tolkiens characters.

There were few strange but nice figures in the GF-range, but this time I am frustrated. Once I thought Mithril was the one and only company producing true Tolkien-figures and not things like this. hmm
